The Museum (Museum of Contemporary Art and Design) is located within the premises of one of San Jose’s most valuable and cherished historical sites: the Old National Liquor Factory (FANAL). After a great deal of remodeling it now hosts the headquarters of the CENAC (National Culture Center) and many other related entities, including the Museum.

It was founded in 1994 wishing to create a space in which to allow–in a permanent fashion- the promotion of modern tendencies. Art forms from all Central America and the continent find common showcase ground in the Museum making for varied and multicultural space.

The MADC possesses 5 galleries, one auditorium and an exterior exhibit space (the Molasses Vault) which is used for events of many different disciplinary natures. An adjoining Gallery exists where visitors may purchase special items of Costa Rican and international origin from an equally diverse group of artists.

It is very important to those in charge of the Museum to showcase those pieces –from individuals or collective background- that best concern those issues of Central American context. It also promotes the implementation of Art competitions, digital art and emerging artists.

Important FAQS:
