There are places that make you visit them before you leave the country. To start, San José’s sight, which might not be very flattering from above, considering that it is a much transited city, beholds the European-style Teatro Nacional, the elevated square in Parque Central, the variety of goods and lively activity at the Mercado Central, and the crafts fairs in front of the Museo Nacional.
As for the museums, San José shows exhibits of pre-Hispanic cultures and colonial artifacts, and exhibits on 19th and 20th century history and culture at the Museo Nacional; some pre-Columbian gold sculpture, jewelry and other artifacts at the Museo De Oro Precolombino; pre-Columbian jade figurines and jewelry at the Museo de Jade; and contemporary art at the Museo de Arte Costarricense.
If what you’re looking for is a memorable meal, a romantic dinner of tilapia in macadamia sauce at Restaurant Grano de Oro is what we recommend; also Costa Rican specialties at La Cocina de la Leña; and delicious ceviche and Peruvian seafood at Machu Picchu.
If you want to seek nightlife activities, visit disco El Tobogán, where you will dance and dance; live bands and a hip beatnik crowd at El Cuartel de la Boca del Monte; and live jazz at the Jazz Café.
Also, if you’re the type of person that enjoys walks, you will have a good time exploring the galleries, cafes and stately mansions of Barrios Amon and Otoya; strolling the pedestrian precinct along Avenida Central; or walking throughout leafy Parque Central.
As we had mentioned before, the specially-for-kids hands-on science exhibits at Museo de los Niños is a great place for all the family to visit and enjoy. If what you want is some amusement park-fun time to spend with the children, you can also visit Pueblo Antigüo, inside the National Amusement Park, which also shows part of Costa Rica’s architecture and history in Colonial times. And, if what you like are animals, you can also visit the Costa Rican animals at Parque Zoológico Simon Bolivar.
