The park was created on July 30th of 1955 in accordance to Law act # 1719, and the name directly pertains to the name of the adjacent town and county (Costarican term Canton) within the Cartago province.  The volcano belongs to the Eastern slope of the Central Volcanic Mountain Range and it is the second highest volcano in the country with 2240 m.s.n.m.

Unlike other more geographically localized parks, this one possesses several ecosystems: The rain forest, evergreen lower mountain and barren plains in the outskirts of the volcano itself. Several natural springs are also present.

Perhaps they main eye and mind catcher would be the access that is permitted to visitors within the Volcanic crater. It is told that during clear sunny days, several surrounding sites such as the Poas Volcano and Braulio Carrillo Park may be seen as part of the panoramic view.

The Volcano itself is part of the Irazu Volcano body, having shown the last eruption between the years of 1864 and 1866. The cone consists of three craters: East Central and Main craters.  The first shaped by a depression deprived of fumarolic activity, while the Central does in fact show natural fume outlets and a temperature that varies between 45 and 90 degrees Celsius. The Main crater is located Southwest and its big fumaroles can be seen from the lovely path designed for visitors.
