San Jose's case could not be compared to the atrocious criminality rate of Mexico City for example, but, can neither deign itself to be relied on for safety as an average sized Canadian town.

In order to comprehend the circumstances of crime that are particular of the capital of Costa Rica, one must understand the situations that it has had to face during specially the last 25-35 years. If one were to ask an elder for a general account on the city’s crime history, they’d always start by telling you that, not only was San Jose safer many years back, but, a general feeling of excess comfort used to exist, to such points where people even used not to lock their house doors at night.

Having the populace experienced a worsening of their economic condition during the crises that befell the nation after president Carazo (mandate timed 1978-1982) repudiated the overwhelming national debt owed to international financial institutions, the Colon Currency lost its high kept value and the a sizeable percentage of the lower middle classes outright fell into straight poverty lines condition.

Beginning during the 1990’s, armed robbery jumped into the national crime spectrum and common street theft and “mugging” something that had happened to at least one individual in every family since then.  Tourists have become outstanding target and it is strongly advised that nightly walks be avoided, especially around Downtown San Jose and within certain neighborhoods. *A map will be soon featured in our site detailing those areas that present greater and lower risk of criminality.

Exhibition of wealth is also highly frowned upon, discretion  and common sense being the main keys towards remaining safe and avoiding bitter experiences.  San Jose after all  -If properly assessed-  can be widely enjoyed.
