Almost by default, the Costarican experiment of natural conservationism and the extending of a culture of environmental awareness and friendliness have paid back the efforts put forward by the local authorities during specially the 1970’s. By then, the few remaining and isolated portions of land that still held some of the primal natural resources of the nation were finally kept out of the reach of the machine of classic mercantilism regnant at the time.

By definition, Ecotourism brings together two concepts that in their classical points of view much counterfeited each other; thus, the relevance attributed to the –one of a kind- breed of Costarican ecotourism (model assumed by many nations in view of its rotund success and practicality).

The Key element in this unusual mix of measures and administration: the utter balance put to action between the necessities and longings of those who visit the country (likewise attracted to this paradise by its natural assets)  and those of the locals while managing to maintain all aspects of the environment affected to this trade as unharmed as feasible.  And there is much at stake in biodiversity: 850 species of birds, more than 200 species of mammals, 13.000 species of plants with about 1500 in orchids alone and so on.  The country has gained recognition by the international entities as pioneer and leader in the implementation of strategies that finely combine the concepts of tourism, environment and sustainable development.

Given the varied and extraordinary aspect of the Costarican landscape, too many possibilities have been employed by visionary people who clearly understand their role not only as members of a community but as grateful children and debtors to the land that bestowed them with such beauty.

It is this website’s desire to showcase and help promulgate the work of such people and their businesses.  San Jose is also the platform from which tourists can engage in conservationist action; may be as tourists who help in the maintenance of the parks by contributing while visiting or in more active role while directly becoming involved with the efforts of the national and foreign communities that operate in the country.
